Cabochon
The term Cabochon is derived from a French word ‘caboche’ meaning ‘small dome’. Cabochon is a type of cut in which gemstone has a rounded or convex top with flat bottom, making cabochon cut stones most ideal for bezel setting. Today cabochon cut is given to any shape of the gemstone, though its been most common for the round of oval shapes.
This cut is most suitable for :- opaque gemstones, that wouldn’t reflect enough light even when cut into facets
- for the softer stones which are most prone to scratches while cutting / polishing
