Coral stone

The Coral stone, also known as ‘moonga’ is an organic gemstone found in the sea which is formed by the collaborative decomposition of skeletons of marine animals. Corals usually grow in typical shape of tree branches.

Coral formation - branch like

It is found in translucent to opaque forms in different colors black, white, red, grey, orange and pink . The most popular and valuable being the red coral. Depth of red defines its value, the most deeper being most valuable. The deep red ones are also the variety which are considered for strengthening the circulatory system of the wearer. It is among the mankind for a long while now and its origin is traced back in 3000 B.C. by the Egyptians. Legends believe, that the Greek God of craft, ‘Hephaestus’ used coral in his first ever artwork. In the present times, coral are usually found in the shallow sea water of different regions such as Australia Tunisia, Corsica, Sicily, France, Spain, Italy, Algeria and India.

Coral used for ornamental purpose are not used in its organic form which is fairly dull. They instead undergo several processes such as chemical treatment, cutting, polishing etc before the end result of lustrous gemstone suitable for ornaments is achieved. Coral as a gemstone is quite soft hence the carved versions of it are very commonly used for jewelry. The very large corals are generally reserved as the decorative pieces.

Coral encourages courage and perseverance among the wearer. It is also known to clear obstacles and aids in finding the right path. Those dealing with instability in life especially with respect to family ties, can also consider this stone. Along with emotional healing benefits, Coral is considered beneficial for diseases like arthritis. It is believed that the changing color of the stone actually indicates fluctuating health conditions of the wearer.
